Design Approach

One of the most enjoyable facets of architecture is that almost every project is different, so there’s always a fresh challenge. We’ll listen to your requirements and will look to impart our passion and enthusiasm to create a memorable design. Whether you are building a new house, altering or extending an existing property, or renovating a listed building, our design approach is to maximise light and space and linking the interior with the landscape outside.

Our projects often involve older buildings where traditional materials and construction methods don’t sit comfortably with modern practices. We like to develop long established elements such as pitched roofs and stone masonry and combine these with contemporary interior design ideas such as double height spaces and open planning. Exposing materials internally imparts a sense of traditional character. All combine to magnify the space and lightness appropriate for modern living.

Green Architects

We’ll make a careful appraisal of the site to assess where views or natural features can be improved. Mindful of current legislation, we’ll look to advise on improving thermal efficiency and using sustainable technology to best effect. For instance, large south facing doors and windows not only open out into the garden but also serve to warm the building and improve natural daylight. We take care however to assess levels of solar gain to ensure that the interior remains comfortable at all times. On older properties, sometimes even the simplest solutions can have a dramatic beneficial effect.

Sustainable Architecture

More proactive solutions would include renewable energy solutions such as heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and green building materials. Our aim is to give the best advice to clients so as to reduce the overall running costs of the property, balancing this against the initial capital expenditure. The approach taken obviously depends on individual clients and the suitability of the building and site.
